Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC): How to Fill It Online, Step by Step

Last verified 24 Oct 2026

Quick answer

  • Most foreign visitors must submit the Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC) online before they arrive. Residents with an ARC, resident visa or diplomatic ID card do not.
  • Submit within 7 days before arrival, counting the day you land.
  • It is free. The only official site is twac.immigration.gov.tw, and it never asks for payment details.
  • You need a passport, an email address, your occupation and phone number, flight numbers and where you will stay.
  • Made a mistake? Use Update Arrival Card on the same site before you reach immigration.

The 7-day window is easy to misjudge. The site’s own example: if you arrive on October 7, you can submit from October 1.

Who must file, and who does not

You must file if you are one of these:

  • A foreign national without an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC), resident visa or diplomatic ID card. This covers most tourists and short-stay business visitors.
  • A Mainland China resident with a multiple-entry permit for sightseeing.
  • A Hong Kong or Macau resident with a multiple-entry permit.
  • An ROC passport holder without household registration in Taiwan and without a Taiwan Area Resident Certificate.

You do not need to file if you hold:

  • A resident visa
  • An Alien Resident Certificate
  • A diplomatic ID card issued by Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Transit

Passengers who only change planes and never pass through immigration do not need a TWAC. You do need one if your connection forces you to clear immigration to collect baggage, or to check in at a departure counter in the public area. In that case choose “Transit” in the “Accommodation in Taiwan” field.

What to have ready

  • The passport you will enter with
  • An email address you can open right now (a code is sent to it)
  • Your occupation and phone number
  • Arrival and departure flight numbers and your departure date
  • Where you will stay: a hotel name or a residential address

The site recommends a passport with at least 6 months of validity for entry. Check your visa rules on the Taiwan visa guide first, because the TWAC does not replace a visa.

Step by step

  1. Open twac.immigration.gov.tw and choose Submit Arrival Card. The interface is available in English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, Vietnamese and Thai.
  2. Read the notice page and press Start.
  3. Email verification. Enter your email and request a code. The code is valid for 5 minutes. If nothing arrives, check spam, or try another address. The site warns that Mainland China email services may not receive the code.
  4. Traveler information. You can upload a photo of your passport’s data page to fill the passport fields automatically, then correct anything it got wrong. If the upload fails, type the details by hand. You will also give nationality, country of birth, place of residence, visa type, occupation, email and phone number.
  5. Itinerary. Enter your arrival flight, departure flight and departure date, your purpose of visit, and where you will stay in Taiwan. If you pick “Visit Relative” you must add the relative’s name and mobile number. If you pick “Others” you must give a reason.
  6. Review. Check every field. Use Edit to go back. Tick the declaration and press Submit.
  7. Confirmation. A confirmation email is sent to the address you gave. Keep it on your phone.

Entering several travelers

The web form takes up to 10 people in one session. Importing an Excel file takes up to 16. Each person still gets their own card, and you can have a traveler’s confirmation sent to the lead traveler’s email or to their own.

Field rules that trip people up

  • The English name field accepts English letters and spaces only.
  • All data fields must be in English or Traditional Chinese, even though the interface has seven languages.
  • If your flight is missing from the drop-down list, choose “NONE OF ABOVE” and type the full flight number.
  • If your onward plans are not fixed, remember that visa-exempt and visitor-visa travelers must still have a confirmed return or onward ticket ready for inspection.

Made a mistake, or plans changed?

Use Update Arrival Card on the same site, as long as you have not yet gone through immigration. Log in with your Arrival Card Number, date of birth and nationality (the manual also lists passport number). Change what you need, submit, and the system emails a new confirmation. Use that latest version.

If you submit a fresh card instead, only the most recent submission is kept.

Accuracy matters. The declaration says incomplete, unclear, inaccurate or fraudulent information may lead to a prohibition on entry. Fix errors rather than leaving them.

Beware of paid look-alike sites

The official site is free and, in its own words, never asks for credit card details or any payment information. The National Immigration Agency’s advice is to check the URL if you are asked to pay and to avoid third-party sites. Type twac.immigration.gov.tw yourself or use the link in this guide rather than a search ad.

At the airport

You do not need to show the TWAC proactively, but an officer may ask for the confirmation email. Keep it where you can open it offline, such as a screenshot.

Completing the TWAC does not give you access to the e-Gate. Only citizens of countries with a reciprocal e-Gate agreement can use it.

Problems on the day have an official fallback. If you have no device or internet, never receive the verification email, or the site shows a maintenance error, you can complete the TWAC on a tablet in the Immigration Hall or ask an officer for help. This will cost you time, so file ahead when you can.

Once you land, see getting from Taoyuan Airport to Taipei for the next step, or the first-time visitor guide for the wider checklist.

Rules change: check before you fly

Entry procedures can be updated at short notice. Check the TWAC FAQ and notice page before you fly. Last verified October 24, 2026.

FAQ

How many days before arrival can I submit the Taiwan Arrival Card?
Within 7 days before your arrival date, including the day you arrive. Each submission is valid for one entry only, so you file a new one for every trip.
Is the Taiwan Arrival Card free?
Yes. The official site is free and never asks for credit card or payment details. If a site asks you to pay, check the address against twac.immigration.gov.tw.
Do I need to print the TWAC?
No. A printout is not required. You get a confirmation email, and an officer may ask to see it on your phone.
Do transit passengers need a Taiwan Arrival Card?
Not if you stay airside and never pass through immigration. You do need one if you must clear immigration to collect baggage or check in at a public-area departure counter.
Does the TWAC replace my visa?
No. It is an arrival record, not a visa or entry permit. You still need a visa unless your passport is visa-exempt.
