What the numbers say

Taipei and the north. Rain falls on 12 to 16 days in every month, so a dry week is never guaranteed. The wettest months are June (345.0 mm), August (337.8 mm) and September (315.2 mm). The driest are November (83.2 mm), December (88.7 mm) and January (90.5 mm). Mean temperatures are lowest in January at 16.4 °C and highest in July at 29.9 °C.

Kaohsiung and the south. The year splits sharply. From November to March, monthly rain stays between 17.7 mm and 32.3 mm, and Kaohsiung averages only 2.8 to 3.6 rainy days a month. From May to September it ranges from 202.2 mm to 512.4 mm, with 16.7 rainy days in August. If you are heading to Kaohsiung, Tainan or the far south, winter is the dry choice.

Hualien and the east coast. The pattern is different again. Rain is lowest from January to April (57.6 to 76.7 mm) and highest in September and October (329.9 mm and 350.6 mm). Autumn, a good season in Taipei, is the wettest part of the year in Hualien.

Choosing a month.

If you want Look at
Mild weather and less rain in Taipei October–November, or December–January if you accept cooler days (16–18 °C)
Dry weather in the south November–March
East coast with the least rain January–April
Hottest weather July (29.9 °C in Taipei, 29.4 °C in Kaohsiung)

Typhoons and heavy rain

Typhoons are tracked by CWA. Its Typhoon News page lists active tropical cyclones in the Western North Pacific, with a potential track area and wind speed probabilities for Taiwan’s counties. CWA says that while a storm exists, its analysis and forecast products are updated every six hours.

The CWA pages used here don’t give fixed typhoon-season dates, so none are listed. If you travel in the wetter months of the table above, keep the plan flexible.

If a storm approaches, CWA links to DGPA’s work and class status page for natural disasters. Also check airline, rail and attraction notices.

Public holidays and crowds, 2027

DGPA’s 2027 calendar lists 121 days off in total. Nine of the holiday periods run three days or longer. DGPA says its calendar applies to government offices, and that private employers follow the Labor Standards Act, so shops and attractions may keep their own hours.

Holiday 2027 dates Days
New Year (Republic of China Founding Day) 1–3 January 3
Lunar New Year 4–10 February (New Year’s Day is 6 February) 7
Peace Memorial Day 27 February–1 March 3
Children’s Day and Tomb Sweeping 3–6 April 4
Labor Day 30 April–2 May 3
Dragon Boat Festival Wednesday 9 June 1
Mid-Autumn Festival Wednesday 15 September 1
National Day 9–11 October 3
Taiwan Retrocession and Kinmen Guningtou Victory Memorial Day 23–25 October 3
Constitution Day 24–26 December 3
New Year 2028 31 December 2027–2 January 2028 3

The Dragon Boat and Mid-Autumn dates are read from DGPA’s full-year calendar. DGPA’s long-holiday table does not list them, as they are single days.

For 2026, the remaining dates are on DGPA’s 2026 calendar page.

Common mistakes

  1. Planning around one city’s weather. Taipei in October is not Hualien in October. Match the month to the region you will spend the most time in.
  2. Treating averages as a forecast. A 30-year mean says what is typical, not what will happen on your dates. Check CWA’s forecast a few days before you travel.
  3. Ignoring the holiday calendar. The seven-day Lunar New Year period and the three-day National Day weekend fall inside otherwise good travel months.
  4. No spare day for a storm. If you have a fixed flight home, leave slack in the itinerary.

Before you fly

Weather and holiday dates can change. Check CWA for weather and DGPA for the calendar before you book. For the rest of your trip planning, see first time in Taiwan and Taoyuan Airport to Taipei.
